Forageplus Magnesium Oxide (Low Iron) 1 kg eller 3 kg

A magnesium for horses in a low iron form. Forageplus high quality, very pure, 99.8%, magnesium oxide for horses provides 60.7% elemental magnesium. An essential mineral for horse hoof and metabolic health. Also crucial for calm behaviour in all horses.

The iron content of this product based from the certificate analysis is 26ppm (0.0026%)  this is twenty times lower than the carbonate form which is typically  500ppm (0.05%), this is why we do not stock magnesium carbonate.

Learn about how to tell if the magnesium you are buying is of a high purity and low in iron here.

We do not stock magnesium chloride because it is less palatable and you would have to feed 5 times more chloride than oxide to get the same elemental magnesium supplementation.

Note that our magnesium oxide tends to be priced higher than other sources due to the fact that we and other horse owners only buy the very best product with a very low iron content.  We do not stock a number of magnesium oxide products because your horse’s health is too important.  Both the magnesium oxide which we sell as a separate and that which we use in our balancers are human pharmaceutical grade.

Magnesium Oxide for horses which is pure and low iron

Cheaper products on the market are likely to have high iron contamination, make sure you ask for a current specification to find out iron levels.

This product is useful to boost magnesium in the diets of all horses and is of potential benefit in the following scenarios:

  • Where a forage analysis shows extra magnesium is needed in addition to that contained in a mineral balancer.
  • Where horses are showing behaviour typical of a magnesium deficiency.
  • Where magnesium needs boosting in the diet of a horse prone to laminitis.

Forageplus does not advise the feeding of separate minerals unless levels have been checked through carrying out a forage analysis.  The ratios of minerals are important and feeding one mineral without supplementing correct levels of another can be detrimental to horse health.  If you are uncertain of mineral levels then feeding either a Forageplus Equine Balancer or carrying out analysis of forage is wise.

Find out about why ratios of minerals fed are so important at Forageplus Talk.

Find out why we recommend feeding our low iron magnesium rather than magnesium chloride.

For a 500 kg horse : Feed maximum 1 x 25 ml scoop per day unless otherwise indicated by a forage analysis. Please be aware of other magnesium supplements in the diet before feeding.

1 x 25 ml scoop will provide approximately 13.8 grams of elemental magnesium

1 x 25 ml scoop = approximately 23 grams of Magnesium Oxide.

If feeding a 25ml scoop to an average 500kg horse a 1kg bag should last you 43.4 days.

If feeding a 25ml scoop to an average 500kg horse a 3kg bag should last you 130.4 days.

Rates for supplementation will vary according to amounts contained with grass, hay or haylage.

Lactating horses, pregnant horses, young horses and horses in moderate to heavy work will all need higher levels. Please contact us for feed rate advice. We are always happy to help.

I have been supplementing with FP low iron magnesium oxide for a couple of years now, in quite high levels to my lad who is very metabolically sensitive. If I experiment with reducing the amount I notice an immediate change in his movement, which could be a decrease in muscle comfort, foot integrity (all mine are barefoot), or gut happiness – but whatever, it is noticeable each time. Cato’s s younger brother is now in full work and also gets high supplementation, and is rock crunchingly happy birthday in himself!

I have an ex racing TB with horrible feet, a headshaking problem and a tendency to be excitable. I had a previous trimmer comment to me that he ‘just doesn’t grow white line’. 18 months ago I had our grass analysed through Forageplus and discovered we were mineral deficient and iron overloaded. Since then he has been on magnesium, copper and zinc and he has never looked so good or gone so well. He is still a very high spirited individual, but it’s manageable now and the headshaking has got to where we can actually ride through the summer months with a mask on whereas before that was impossible. The feet are looking good, the white lines are growing and all is good in his world.

I have had horses for many years and tried many foods. When I brought my Andalusian I struggled to find any feed he could have and always wondered if my horses were getting the right balance of minerals. Things came to a head a couple of years ago I lost my old horse, my Andalusian was badly affected and went down with toxic laminitis. We battled for a long time trying to stop it but nothing worked.

As he slowly recovered I decided to try Forageplus minerals to support him nutritionally. Within 3 months my horse was able to be ridden again something the vet didn’t think was going to be possible. He is still sound and ridden today and I am sure forage focussed minerals supported his recovery.

I use the same feed now for my other horse too and her coat is shiny and her feet rock hard. I highly recommend Forageplus to everyone with a horse as the advice and products are excellent.

I was using Magnesium Oxide for some 5/6 years before we discovered Forageplus. After having a feed plan done and finding out just exactly what nutritional support my metabolic horse needed to maintain health, we’ve never looked back! Supporting her immune system and strong hoof growth has helped the maintenance of abscess free hooves, even in autumn and the wet winter months. Her white lines are strong, healthy ….. the tightest white lines ever to date, good strong healthy horn which will support healthy hooves with no abscesses!! Together with the other important additives we add into our daily feed, Magnesium Oxide is paramount for us and a big one as far as metabolic horses are concerned. It works for us! No Foot, No Horse,….it’s where it all begins in my eyes!!

Brilliant product! Alongside the other minerals in my horse’s plan this is helping keep his coat fantastic and has also helped chill him out. Feeding plans are definitely the way forward for a healthy, happy, well balanced horse.
